Inequalities – and the discriminations that sustain them – are deeply rooted in social structures. The ISMI research group aims to promote theoretical, methodological, and empirical reflection on the topic of discrimination, while also fostering the design and implementation of inclusive practices to counteract mechanisms of social exclusion. Through theoretical reflection, empirical research, and the design of educational interventions, the aim is to promote a societal change towards greater equity and social justice.
The research group is multidisciplinary and open to contributions from various disciplines interested in exploring the topic of discrimination and inequalities. In more detail, the research group will deepen the understanding of the dynamics responsible for social inequalities and discrimination by adopting an intersectional approach, to understand how different forms of inequality intersect and reinforce each other, influencing social practices and individual experiences. The intersectional approach aims to go beyond analyzing individual experiences, offering an alternative interpretative framework that views discrimination as the result of the intertwining of various forms of power. The group’s activities will involve conducting interdisciplinary research, organizing seminars and workshops, publishing academic articles, and collaborating with other researchers and institutions. In addition to academic research, the group will engage in community awareness activities and advocacy, organizing public conferences and creating educational opportunities.
The main objectives of the research group are:
Development of transdisciplinary study paths and empirical research: Through transdisciplinary theoretical reflection and empirical research, ISMI aims to explore emerging trends in discriminatory dynamics and propose innovative solutions to counter them. To achieve this, the group plans to develop study and research paths that deepen the theoretical understanding of intersectionality, including from a critical perspective, and its potential application in the study of discrimination. Empirical studies will focus on the manifestations and impacts of inequalities and discrimination based on sexism, racism, classism, and ableism, prioritizing inclusive and participatory research strategies.
Design of training programs: The group intends to design training programs aimed at key actors involved in the challenges of social inclusion and combating discrimination in social, educational, and university contexts. These programs will integrate theory and practice, identifying crucial competencies in collaboration with experts in the field.
Co-construction of educational, professional, and institutional practices: The research group seeks to promote and actively participate in the co-construction of educational, professional, and institutional practices aimed at inclusion, collaborating with various stakeholders to develop inclusive approaches adaptable to different life contexts.
Promotion of public debate: As part of its research activities, workshops, thematic seminars, and conferences will be organized to share knowledge and results. The research group will also collaborate on the publication of research and studies.
Internationalization: Particular attention will be paid to promoting internationalization through the creation of networks aimed at deepening the reflection on issues of discrimination. In this context, collaborations will be established with academic institutions and international organizations to expand dialogue and share experiences related to various forms of discrimination, contributing to a broader debate open to multicultural perspectives.
Participation in national and international calls: To support its projects, members of the research group will participate in national and international competitive calls.
